Human trafficking of teen girls
Police have arrested a Sacramento high school soccer coach on charges he forced two teenage girls into prostitution, reports CBS Sacramento. Elan Seagraves, 34, was taken into custody in the early morning on Christmas Day.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says the arrest occurred after a 17-year-old girl called 911 to report she had been the victim of sexual assault and human trafficking.
Seagraves worked as a boys soccer coach at Sacramento’s John F. Kennedy High School and various other local youth leagues. He also works as a driver for Uber and Lyft. Read more
Investigators say deputies got a call early Christmas morning from a teen girl
who said she was the victim of sexual assault and human trafficking. She told deputies she was hiding in the backyard of a home near Sacramento, and the man forcing her into performing sex acts was waiting for her nearby.
“It’s absolutely 100 per cent alarming,” said Shaun Hampton with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.
On Friday, Seagraves was still listed as the men’s junior varsity and varsity soccer coach for Kennedy High School but was removed in the afternoon. Deputies say Seagraves is also a coach and referee in some local youth soccer leagues, as well as an Uber and Lyft driver.
“We want to encourage, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of any other things they may be involved in, it’s important to come forward,” Hampton said.
The Sacramento City Unified School District responded to the arrest in a statement:
“We are extremely disappointed in Mr Seagraves’ unacceptable behavior. While he passed a background check and had no prior offences when we hired him to coach soccer in our district, we expect more appropriate behaviour from someone we trusted to work with our kids. Mr Seagraves will no longer be allowed to work with our kids in any capacity.” Read more
Coach Charged With human trafficking of teen girls
The call came in shortly before 3 a.m. on Christmas Day: A frightened 17-year-old girl, hiding in the backyard of a suburban California home, told the operator that she had been trafficked into prostitution by a man waiting for her in a nearby car.
Police officers arrived and soon found the man sitting in a vehicle with a second girl, also 17, who they determined had also been trafficked, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said.
The man, Elan Seagraves, was a soccer coach for the local school district, and he also worked as a driver for the ride-sharing apps Uber and Lyft. He was arrested and charged with two felonies related to the trafficking and pimping of minors, said Shelly Orio, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento County district attorney’s office.
“I’m a Soccer Coach, Bartender, and a Dad,” Seagraves wrote on Facebook, where his profile picture on Wednesday showed a group of teenage girls in soccer uniforms. He identified himself on Facebook as a coach at John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento as well as a coach and trainer at NorCal Elite Soccer Trainers, where employees did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Alex Barrios, a spokesman for the Sacramento City Unified School District, said Seagraves had been an intermittent employee of the district and was fired Thursday.
“We have let him go,” Barrios said. “After this announcement, we made the decision that he was not going to be able to fulfill his duties as a soccer coach.” Read more
