Most websites are happy only to recycle gossip news and pass it off as real news. Other sites put very catchy titles to attract eyeballs. Upon reading the article, you are left with a bad taste in your mouth and the uncontrollable urge to strike out at the author. Most reporters today would be better of, selling used cars as their skills are on par with a used car salesperson.

We take a similar approach to news, we do not want to discuss gossip news but look at developments that could have an effect on the investment landscape. Confirmation bias refers to our favouring of information that confirms our existing beliefs. Without accounting for this bias in our thinking, we are more likely to fall for fake news if we agree with what is being said. This works the other way around as well; indeed, confirmation bias will yield the opposite effect, enhanced scepticism, for fake news stories we dislike. Yes, it’s good that confirmation bias can, in some contexts, help us dispel fake news; but, at the end of the day, engaging this bias exhibits a lack of critical thinking. Psychology today
