U.S, G7 partners remain at odds on Paris Accord

Environment ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) countries, including the United States, met in Bologna on Sunday and Monday to discuss issues including climate change, sustainable development, and litter at sea. However, the group was divided over the Paris Climate Agreement, following US President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this month to withdraw the US from the agreement. Italian Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti said that positions over the accord remained far apart and were unlikely to change. Other G7 leaders have called on allies to accelerate efforts to tackle climate change, with Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and Paolo Gentiloni insisting that the Paris agreement cannot be renegotiated.. Six of the G7 Commit to Climate Action. Trump Wouldn’t Even Join Conversation.

During the recent Group of Seven (G7) summit, President Donald Trump was seen as further isolating the US from its allies on climate change. Trump skipped the G7’s formal discussions on the global warming crisis. And in the summit’s communique, the United States refused to join in common statements by the other six nations reaffirming their commitment to the Paris climate agreement, which he wants to abandon. Instead, the U.S. unilaterally promoted fossil fuels. And in the end, Trump renounced the whole communique in a Twitter tirade. The isolation was viewed as particularly unfortunate by some, given the multiple crises facing the world. Full Story
