Chinese ChatGPT Rivals: Threat to Industry Dominance?

The Rise of Chinese ChatGpt Rivals

Can China’s ChatGpt Rivals Keep Up with Microsoft and OpenAI?

Apr 12, 2023

China’s Alibaba Group has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence product, Tongyi Qianwen, an AI chatbot, one of ChatGpt rivals that will be integrated across all of Alibaba’s businesses in the near future. The cloud-based chatbot will first be introduced to Alibaba’s workplace messaging app, DingTalk, and its voice assistant, Tmall Genie. Tongyi Qianwen is capable of performing several tasks such as drafting emails, writing meeting notes, and business proposals. It is also capable of working in both Chinese and English languages. The launch of Tongyi Qianwen comes after Alibaba announced plans to develop a rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology earlier this year.

Generative AI: The Rise of Intelligent Chatbots

Artificial intelligence technology is undergoing a massive transformation, with generative AI chatbots becoming increasingly popular. ChatGPT by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, released in November last year, can answer questions in natural language and mimic different writing styles using data from the internet. The technology has since been integrated into Microsoft’s Office apps, and Alphabet’s Google and Chinese technology group Baidu has also released similar chatbots.

The Rise of Chinese AI

China’s tech companies are quickly catching up with the rest of the world in the development of AI technology, with companies such as SenseTime, CloudWalk, Yitu, and Megvii leading the way. Alibaba’s recent announcement follows SenseTime’s unveiling of its chatbot, SenseNova. The CEO of SenseTime predicts that AI programs will soon take on 80% of future AI development work, leaving human programmers to offer direction and clean up generated results.

Challenges of Developing Chatbots in China

While the rise of AI chatbots presents an exciting opportunity for companies worldwide, Chinese tech firms such as Baidu face unique challenges. These challenges include containing chatbots’ tendency to “hallucinate” facts and prompt unpleasant or inappropriate language. Chinese companies must also adhere to strict government censorship guidelines for online content, leading to scepticism about their ability to create a general-purpose chatbot that users cannot trick into spitting out unacceptable speech.
