Clinton Does Not Like To Wear American Flag Pin
During a nationally televised debate among Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were observed not wearing American flag lapel pins. Obama, in particular, had faced criticism for his choice not to wear one, although he had recently been seen wearing a pin given to him by a veteran at a campaign event. The issue was brought up by a voter named Nash McCabe, who asked Obama why he chose not to wear the flag pin, acknowledging that it wasn’t a question about his patriotism but rather a concern shared by servicemen, policemen, and EMS workers who wear the flag.
Charles Gibson, the moderator from ABC News, explained that this question had been raised repeatedly by voters and was a topic of discussion on the internet. It was seen as a potential vulnerability for Obama in the general election, as advisers from both Clinton’s and McCain’s camps believed it could be used against him. The question posed to Obama was how he planned to convince Democrats that not wearing the flag pin would not be a vulnerability for him.
In response, Obama expressed his deep respect for the American flag and his unwavering love for his country. He emphasized that his presence as a candidate for president was a testament to the opportunities and possibilities offered by the United States. Obama recounted his personal story, highlighting that he was born to a teenage mother, raised by a single mother and grandparents from small towns in Kansas. Yet, he had received an education and aspired to the highest office in the land. It was his gratitude for the opportunities afforded to him that fueled his love for his country.
During the debate, the absence of flag lapel pins on Clinton and Obama sparked discussion and raised questions about their patriotism. However, Obama took the opportunity to articulate his deep reverence for the American flag and his belief in the values and promise of the United States, emphasizing that his commitment to the country was not dependent on the display of a pin but rooted in his life experiences and the opportunities he had been granted.
