China Warns of Global Islamic Extremism
China’s Communist Party has escalated its warnings about the potential threat of global religious extremism and the need to safeguard China’s traditional identity. High-ranking officials from predominantly Muslim regions, including Sharhat Ahan in Xinjiang and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, have raised concerns about the impact of the “international anti-terror situation” on China’s stability.
In a recent regional meeting open to the media, Ningxia Communist Party secretary Li Jianguo likened the policies of former US President Donald Trump’s administration to those aimed at preventing religious extremism from infiltrating American culture. China’s Communist Party is issuing stronger warnings about the dangers of global religious extremism infiltrating the country and the need to protect traditional Chinese identity. Officials from predominantly Muslim regions, including Shaerheti Ahan, a top political and legal affairs party official in Xinjiang, have cautioned against the “international anti-terror situation” destabilizing China. President Xi Jinping has directed the party to “Sinicize” ethnic and religious minorities.
At the same time, Xinjiang leaders have increased surveillance measures, police patrols, and demonstrations to counter violence blamed on Islamic separatists. Despite doubts by some scholars about global jihadi networks in China, top Chinese officials are adopting international rhetoric to support claims of growing Islamic extremism worldwide. Officials from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region recently warned of similar dangers, drawing comparisons to the policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Full Story
