That's true that in some hotels you can't connect to their wifi over a VPN, it just won't work. That's really inconvenient (and quite frankly a bit suspicious) but I don't think you can predict that in advance if you've never stayed at that place.
A safer alternative to unprotected wifi is to connect via a cellular network (4G). Now, you can purchase an e-sim with a data package before traveling. I used the Airalo app (there are others as well) when I went to Turkey last year. Worked great, I could use the internet from anywhere for just a few dollars. No roaming fees, and no wasting an hour to purchase and register a local sim card.

Meh. I kept hearing about jerk chicken so I tried it in Jamaica a couple weeks ago. It was OK but I can't understand why everyone likes it so much. Maybe I'll try it in New York next month. I hear they have a killer Jamaican restaurant.
On another note, I know Jamaicans are famous for saying "Yah Mon". But we had a tour guide that said it after nearly every sentence. By the end of the tour I wanted to strangle him. It made me wonder if it was a speech impediment or if he was trying to train tourists.
Current atmospheric levels of CO2 (400ppm) are much lower than 500 million years ago (3000-9000ppm).
