Avoid the Negative Spiral

Post by harryg »

I logged in this morning - wow, never seen such a flurry of posts in one day.

Like many others, I am down a lot this year. It's not nice. But you know the real danger in a situation like this? It's not losing the money - it's getting into a negative thought spiral and freezing up.

When fear takes over you cannot act rationally, or sometimes at all. You will miss opportunities, make trading mistakes, compound errors.

I appreciate that it can be irritating when seasoned traders seemingly make light of trading losses - I can assure you that it's not funny. Unfortunately, losing money is an unavoidable part of making it.

So my advice is to do what you can to avoid the negative thought spiral. Take time away from watching the markets, go for a walk, do something unrelated. Start fresh on Monday.

I don't take overlays too seriously and don't use them for primary analysis. But they are interesting to peruse and finding the rights ones cheer me up.

Tradeable bottom's most likely in or close, stocks to the top of a small molehill, baby!

Agreed, but they definitely draw you in.
You can almost make any data present the story you need it to say.

Annie Duke is a former winning professional poker player turned writer and consultant. She's been mentioned by some on this board previously, including MarkD and myself.

Her segment starts around the 11:00 minute mark at the time stamp. Pretty good stuff imo - directly applicable to investing/trading the markets.

1) The success of a trader is directly related to the speed by which they turn losing trades and drawdowns into actionable improvements.

The best traders engage in active review processes to ensure that they learn from setbacks. Those reviews also allow them to learn from successes.

A major source of poor performance among traders is failing to engage in timely and regular deliberate practice. Successful market participants study themselves intensively, just as they study markets intensively.

Unsuccessful participants don't study; they are too busy trading.

2) There are two types of traders: a) those who are risk-takers and need to learn to limit losses; and b) those who are risk-minimizers and need to expand gains.

We tend to manage our trading the way we manage risks and rewards in other areas of life, because--ultimately--we are managing ourselves emotionally.

The challenge is to understand how we are wired and how to best express and manage that in our trading. Many trading problems occur when we attempt to take risk in ways that interfere with our self-management.

There are times when it’s great to have digital detoxes.

Analyze the negative emotion. Mostly it comes down to greed but the biggest emotional state that prevents one from remaining calm and to collect gains is Arrogance/Pride

Arrogance/Pride that you think you can beat the market every year, win every month or even going into day trading.

The best trades are the wins with the least effort, full of conviction and having a battle plan if it doesn’t workout

Dear TIT Community:

Just a quick FYI that I will be leaving this forum.

I think I was the first sub to sign up on this forum over three years ago.

It's been a wonderful, crazy ride since ... I wanted to thank everyone for all the interactions, both naughty and nice. I've learned a lot, especially from the naughty ones. The "iron sharpens iron" thing.

If you want to see what I am up to and what my thoughts regarding the markets are, you can check in with me on twitter:

Twitter is a bit of a Wild West, but when used in a focused manner, I have found it helpful in interacting with astute minds, and in gauging mass sentiment.

Best of luck, and may the Force always be with you.

Cheers,

Yodean

p.s. The Jesus Buy Signal triggered last October is still in effect, and Judas has yet to make an appearance (for the Judas Sell Signal).

Peace!

This hybrid bull market making all people insane.

I think it’s very important to protect and guard who you associate with , especially with the public nowadays

Insanity and madness spread like forest fire and that leads to emotional and irresponsible decisions when it comes to making money

Just some food for thought. If we get a pullback then embrace it or search for beaten up stocks that have potential for explosive moves
