I used to want a Porsche 911 my youth through early adulthood then realized I dont need it. I need something that gets me back and forth to the inlaws but now realize I need the Porsche again to get out of there as fast as possible.
Seriuosly, once I understood the difference between needs and wants it changed many things for me. It can make you very happy by reducing the threshold for things that really dont make you happy when you have them and the effort it takes to have useless things.
Very hard to teach someone this simple subject so I dont waste my time. They will or wont figure it out and I dont feel the need to help them.

Regarding the relative issue I concur with needing a fast gateway vehicle. I view 90% of relatives as strangers that you happen to be biologically related to that have your worst interests at heart. I don't attend any family gathering with more than 30 family members but Now i am thinking that I need to reduce it to 15 or less. My wife and I downsized with minimal remorse four years ago. It took me a bit to bring her around to this idea that "stuff" can be replaced. We kept a few sentimental items but moved on. There is still too much "stuff" we surround ourselves with but the next time around it will be much easier because we have 1/3 of the crap around.

Travelling a lot made me realize that most of the crap I thought I needed was rubbish an illusion created to con myself i needed the things I did not so I decided to more things i thought i needed to things I deemed as wants and that made it easier to focus on the real things that matter. Good food, fresh air, beautiful scenic views, a good night sleep, a chat with a wise person or a good friend and things along the same vein. The less we have the less stress one has. It has to explain until you experience it, So you are on the right track.

My religion as you put is hard to define. I used to say I am spiritual but that concept has been bastardized too much, So now I prefer the term Universal. I embrace the good things, some mischief but reject the evil stuff. In most ways we think along the same lines. Attacks on religion are another tool to be used to divide us and keep us at each other's throat. Fortunately, in the present case, us folks here are too civilised for that. However, the present world is reminiscent of a sci-fi movie where the baddies have frayed the fabric between worlds in order to release greater evil.
