Global Cooling
Older members will remember that before lying about all night worrying about Global Warming, we were all lying about all night worrying about Global Cooling.
Funny how they stopped calling it global warming. Was it perhaps because
a) it was difficult to prove the warming?
b) many people in the countries targeted by this rhetoric (eg Northern Europe and Americas) would quite welcome a bit of warming?
Now they call it Climate Change, which is brilliant from a persuasion perspective. Undefined, almost meaningless and therefore very difficult to refute.
Oops, seem to have sidetracked there. As I was saying, before the warming, we had the cooling. Scientists told us that by the year 2000 we would be in a new Ice Age, partly because of pollution blocking out the sun. Snow and ice cover of the earth was increasing at a rapid rate.
See some random newspaper clips below.
This week’s clip is from Smith & Jones. They did a sketch show over many years called Alas Smith & Jones. Their most famous idea was called Head to Heads. Here they would look at each other and discuss a Certain Issue. Mel Smith (RIP) would “educate” Griff Rhys Jones, who knew nothing. In short order we would find out that Mel didn’t know much either.
It’s part of a longer one, hopefully will start at the right place (13mins31).

I was in college in the upper midwest USA. 60s days straight without sunshine in the winter of 1977, followed by 30 days in 1978. It made you believe it was possible. Then the winter weather only got better for 40 years and that theory was shot to hell. It appears a brief cooling is underway over the past 7-10 years but it's only from personal observation.

It's gotten to the point the President now openly displays arrogance even above that of Donald Trump. And points out that in the information age, institutions will attempt anything (Covid, Ukraine, etc) to hang onto centralized power. AI will destroy these myths.

Poison for the mind ...
@BossNinja: be careful, watching too many of these types of clips may potentially weaken your Ninja powers, and adversely affect your Second Sight. Looks like Joe could use some extra methylene blue, combined with shilajit. Nah, who am I kidding - it was too late five years ago ...

Re: Light Entertainment
A new fact-checking AI-based system will emerge one that can spot lies in real time and is not a spot where liars and cheats try to push their own agenda. Most of today's fact-checkers don't even know what the word fact means. They confuse it with S**T
How Snopes Lies and Misleads Readers
Snopes is a bad, dangerous, deceptive site. They use a very conscious, malicious form of misinformation to mislead and manipulate their readers by selective application of facts and omission of context. Usually they do this to present a partisan picture advancing a particular narrative, specifically the preferred perspective the corporate establishment wants to promote.
Their strategy, used time and time again, is simple:
1) Create a strawman statement that is clearly false.
2) State that it is false.
3) Painstakingly establish that said strawman is not true with evidence.
What is important to note is the contents of the “what’s true” section, which is usually the bulk of the story.

Co-Founder of ‘Fact-Checker’ Snopes Busted Plagiarizing Under Fake Name
It’s getting more and more challenging to differentiate between actual news stories and Babylon Bee headlines. Case-in-point: “The Co-Founder Of The Fact-Checking Site Snopes Was Writing Plagiarized Articles Under A Fake Name.”
According to Buzzfeed:
David Mikkelson, the co-founder of the fact-checking website Snopes, has long presented himself as the arbiter of truth online, a bulwark in the fight against rumors and fake news. But he has been lying to the site’s tens of millions of readers: A BuzzFeed News investigation has found that between 2015 and 2019, Mikkelson wrote and published dozens of articles containing material plagiarized from news outlets such as the Guardian and the LA Times.
After inquiries from BuzzFeed News, Snopes conducted an internal review and confirmed that under a pseudonym, the Snopes byline, and his own name, Mikkelson wrote and published 54 articles with plagiarized material. The articles include such topics as same-sex marriage licenses and the death of musician David Bowie.
Snopes VP of Editorial and Managing Editor Doreen Marchionni suspended Mikkelson from editorial duties pending “a comprehensive internal investigation.” He remains an officer and a 50% shareholder of the company.
“Our internal research so far has found a total of 54 stories Mikkelson published that used appropriated material, including all of the stories Buzzfeed shared with us,” Marchionni and Snopes Chief Operating Officer Vinny Green said in a statement.

Interesting use of a strawman (Mikkelson) argument, to defame a company because they use strawman arguments. Not saying they're wrong...
