Vitamin C

Post by harryg »

I know that it is 100x better to get vitamins from natural sources, and I expect most know this already, but since this is the time of year when many in the Northern Hemisphere add Vit C to their diets:

Most commercially available 'Vitamin C' is ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid is not Vitamin C; it's just a small part of Vitamin C.

And most ascorbic acid is apparently synthesised from (GMO?) corn in China.

Pauling, the US double nobel price, recognized the healthy effects of vitC in the body. He analyzed the redox reaction of ascorbic acid in the body. Bigpharma declared war against him, yes vitC avoids cardio illness and cancer. There is a lot of litterature about it. I have read a lot on this subject, I will search some books in my bookcase, useful books.

@MAGANinja: I've gotten over the whole "China is evil" thing. Sure, CCP may be a shade of dark, but so is American DeepState.

From a certain angle of observation, the primary purpose of the entire U.S. f***ing military is to protect the role of the USD as the world's reserve currency.

The true war is not China vs. the U.S.S.A., it's the much-anticipated main event of the yuan CBDC vs. the USD.

Most of the other major conflicts are sideshows or manifestations of this clash of Titans.

Do a detailed study of current American military base placements as well as U.S. aircraft carrier group movements and deployments. U.S. DeepState has to protect oil interests, as well as hem the CCP in. Etc. Wait for TSM to get out of Taiwan (TSM is busy trying to build extra fabs in countries friendly to American DeepState interests), and then allow the CCP to acquire Formosa bloodlessly.

Russia's not a true offensive threat militarily - aside from optics, Ukraine means comparably little to American DeepState. The Eurozone is a mess and pretty much dead woman walking, financially, as both you and I know.

Russia is strong defensively, though, and Putin will be satisfied with that - he's got enough domestic problems. 'Sides, historically, Russia has never lost a significant war on home soil. They have decent - and likely even excellent - cyberattack capabilities.

Russia's hackers are number one, but the problem is that they don't know how to use the info they hack. China puts it to much better use. If Russia could do what China does, it would be a top power. Russia is a wild card so much potential but so much corruption also

Vitamin C vs Tomato Concentrate

Post by harryg »

Wow, a couple of throwaway lines about Vitamin C and we've got a worldwide power struggle.

Dare I mention tomato purée (concentrate)?

Most tomato purée is apparently not, as one might imagine, made from concentrated nice ripe tomatoes from Italy or similar, but is made from an otherwise inedible tomato grown especially for the purpose in China.

I first heard about this as "Red Gold", in French.

I have been on my self-created Orange Program for several months now, inspired by fellow sub. Hooligan.

Basically, I eat at least one orange a day - if I forget to do so on a particular day, I eat at least two the following day, and so forth.

Besides natural vitamin C and fibre, oranges also contain significant amounts of glutathione.

A banana a day can be quite useful, in fact two is the optimal amount. The fibre is good for the digestive tract and they are very high in potassium. I take my oranges squeezed. I will squeeze 2-3 oranges in the morning and drink the juice. I never drink the stuff that sells for OJ in the supermarket which is generally crap

And to keep this theme going, how about fake maple syrup?

Along those lines, most Yogurt is crap

This is because standard store yogurt including those squeezable yogurt tubes for kids are not the probiotic filled food that the television commercials and other advertising would lead you to believe.

The problem is that commercial yogurt is fermented for very short periods of time. This includes highly popular Greek yogurt alternatives. Is Greek yogurt better for you than regular? Not if the inoculation time for the probiotics to grow is insufficient!

The length of time for fermentation of commercial yogurt (both regular and Greek) is so short (one person in the dairy industry told me that it is an hour or even less) that thickening agents are sometimes even added to commercial yogurt to give it the look and feel of yogurt that has been fermented for much longer such as would happen with yogurt made on a small dairy farm or in your kitchen.

This is why Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome, recommends avoiding store yogurt and eating yogurt only that you’ve made yourself and fermented for a full 24 hours. This is to ensure that the majority of the lactose (milk sugar) is used up and sufficient strength of the probiotic cultures.

You Won’t Believe What’s In Your Yogurt
HFCS-90 – This variation of high fructose corn syrup contains way more fructose than regular high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). When HFCS-90 is used, the ingredient label won’t indicate that high fructose corn syrup is an ingredient, rather it can be deceptively listed as simply “fructose” or “fructose syrup” without any reference to corn syrup. Regular HFCS contains up to 55% fructose, whereas HFCS-90 has 90% fructose by weight. That’s 9 times more fructose than the average fruit! An overload of fructose in the diet isn’t healthy because diets that are high in fructose are associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease. HFCS-90 is derived from corn starch, which is likely GMO. It’s totally misleading when companies say that fructose is natural and comes from fruit, when it’s a processed additive typically derived from GMO corn.

Neosugar – This is a highly processed form of sugar made by hydrolyzing liquid GMO sugar beets or sugar cane. It’s so heavily processed that your body can’t digest it and it just passes through you like a fiber. It’s also marketed as a prebiotic, but there isn’t much evidence out there that neosugar is more beneficial than real food and it appears to just be a marketing ploy. Natural prebiotics are found naturally in raw fruits and vegetables. According to Dr. Michael Blaut, “It is questionable whether a wholesome diet rich in fruit and vegetables needs to be supplemented with prebiotics for optimal health effects”. Some names used by industry for neosugar are “Nutraflora” and “Fructan”, which is how you may see it listed on the ingredient label. Beware that neosugar is allowed in organic yogurt. Thankfully, the only organic company that is currently known to use neosugar is Horizon, so it’s pretty easy to avoid.

Dimethylpolysiloxane – You’ve heard me refer to this chemical in the past as the silly putty ingredient that’s widely used as a defoamer in oil fryers at restaurants, and famously used in McDonalds french fries and soda fountains. Turns out that it can also be used during the processing of yogurt – and it’s not labeled, even if residues remain in the final product. One of the biggest issues I’ve got with dimethylpolysiloxane is that the FDA allows it to be preserved with formaldehyde, one of the most highly toxic substances on earth. As Cornucopia highlights in their report, most of the safety studies that have been done on dimethylpolysiloxane were conducted or paid for by the chemical companies, and not enough independent research has been done. Every yogurt company I called – Dannon, Chobani, Zoi, Greek Gods – emphatically denied that they use any anti-foaming chemicals, except for one. Yoplait (General Mills) told us it was proprietary information and “We’re sorry, but we don’t share processing information”.

Nanoparticles – There’s a big controversy surrounding the results of a 2012 study that found titanium dioxide in Dannon yogurt. In May, Mother Jones reported that Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt contained the nanoparticle titanium dioxide, but have since retracted this from their article following Dannon’s claims that, “We don’t use any ingredients in Dannon plain yogurt that contain titanium dioxide. In the event we use an added color in our products we label it as an added ingredient”. I also contacted Dannon, and they confirmed this information. However, microscopic particles of titanium dioxide (nanoparticles) can be used as an artificial color to make white foods whiter and brighter. According to Friends of the Earth, there’s been “a tenfold increase in unregulated, unlabeled “nanofood” products on the American market since 2008… made by major companies including Kraft, General Mills, Hershey, Nestle, Mars, Unilever, Smucker’s and Albertsons. But due to a lack of labeling and disclosure, a far greater number of food products with undisclosed nanomaterials are likely currently on the market”. This concerns me because nanoparticles have been shown to carry risks to human health and the environment, and nanoparticles of titanium dioxide are specifically linked to gastrointestinal inflammation.

Synthetic Pesticides – Yogurts that contain fruit likely contain synthetic pesticide residues unless they are organic. Berries are the most popular fruits found in yogurts, and they’re also on the EWG’s Dirty Dozen List of the most contaminated produce. The pectin that is added to some yogurts may also contain another dose of pesticides, as it’s made from conventional fruit. The National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the President’s Cancer Panel all warn about the health dangers of consuming pesticides found on conventional produce.

Secondly many organic yoghurts contain Carrageenan

The results showed that intraplantar injection of carrageenan led to time-dependent development of peripheral inflammation, which resulted in a significant increase in the levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1 (IL-1) β, nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and also iNOS and COX-2 protein expression in inflamed paw. However, systemic administration of EA (1–30 mg/kg, intraperitoneal [i.p.]) could reduce edema in a dose-dependent fashion in inflamed rat paws with ED50 value 8.41 (5.26–14.76) mg/kg. It decreased the serum concentration of NO, PGE2, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, and suppress the protein expression of iNOS, COX-2 enzymes, and attenuated the formation of PGE2, TNF-α and IL-1 β in inflamed paw tissue. We also demonstrated that EA significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in liver at 5 h after carrageenan injection. Moreover, histopathological studies indicated that EA significantly diminished migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes into site of inflammation, as did indomethacin.

The commonly used food additives, carrageenan and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), are used to develop intestinal inflammation in animal models. These food additives are excluded from current dietary approaches to induce disease remission in Crohn’s disease such as exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) using a polymeric formula. By reviewing the existing scientific literature, this review aims to discuss the role that carrageenan and CMC may play in the development of IBD. Animal studies consistently report that carrageenan and CMC induce histopathological features that are typical of IBD while altering the microbiome, disrupting the intestinal epithelial barrier, inhibiting proteins that provide protection against microorganisms, and stimulating the elaboration of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Similar trials directly assessing the influence of carrageenan and CMC in humans are of course unethical to conduct, but recent studies of human epithelial cells and the human microbiome support the findings from animal studies.

Carrageenan and CMC may trigger or magnify an inflammatory response in the human intestine but are unlikely to be identified as the sole environmental factor involved in the development of IBD or in disease recurrence after treatment. However, the widespread use of carrageenan and CMC in foods consumed by the pediatric population in a “Western” diet is on the rise alongside a corresponding increase in IBD incidence, and questions are being raised about the safety of frequent usage of these food additives. Therefore, further research is warranted to elucidate the role of carrageenan and CMC in intestinal inflammation, which may help identify novel nutritional strategies that hinder the development of the disease or prevent disease relapse post-EEN treatment
