Let's face it, all forms of government are corrupt because they involve human beings. Athenian democracy is not what we'd consider democracy. Only 20% of the population were considered citizens and able to vote. Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe not such a bad system: both parents Athenian, no vote until >20, women, slaves and foreigners were non-citizens!

The ideal state for Plato, kallipolis, was an aristocratic state based on reason and philosopher king. Three classes, the guardians, the auxiliaries and the producers. The guardians have always the power.

For him, democraty is the fourth system and lets eventually place to tyranny. For Plato, in order of preference

1) aristocraty
2) timocraty
3) oligarchie
4) democraty
5) tyrany

The Athenians compared themselves with other greek states or other civilizations. In comparaison with Sparta, Athens was democratic, in comparaison with Persia, Athens was an advanced democraty, and they were proud of their democratic institutions.

But I think we're about to jump/drop the Ancient Greek Barriers here in the Modern US, going from Oligarchy straight to Tyranny with no intervening Democracy. You'll feel even better then (or rather you'll do what you're told).
