number of holdings in my tactical portfolio
Should one put a limit on number of holdings or companies to invest in - right now i am doing about 19 plus 2 short sells? What about the absolute minimum for say someone just getting started and very limited funds (not me)? What about limiting buy orders? - i have not added mine up exactly but between ones i have actually in my orders not yet filled and others in my alerts probably about 45 but some are level 2 ones. All as to management. Also sure takes me a long time to go thru the updates cross checking everything against orders already in and the current portfolio - maybe 3 hours but i do have cfs which slows me down considerably - however long retired and in isolation a lot now because of cfs + now covid it gives me something to do.

Depends on your trading plan and size of your account
I’d say if you have a smaller account, only take plays that are appealing to you

The problem with this strategy is, which ones will be the winning ones?AstuteShift wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 4:16 pm Depends on your trading plan and size of your account

With MU service (and many other services), there is a percentage of winning out of all the recommended plays. Even though the winning percentage is high with MU (kudos to SOL), your chances of winning become smaller if you try to pick from SOL's pick. If SOL's winning ratio is 0.8, and your luck of winning is also 0.8, then the winning ratio of your portfolio becomes 0.64.

Re: number of holdings in my tactical portfolio
We are going to start reducing the time we allow a given stock to pull back to the suggested ranges. So if we have 10 candidates on the buying list and another 3 to 4 new potential candidates. We will at least eliminate 3 of the current candidates and replace them with new ones
However, most importantly as the number of new Plays increase, we will aim for more extreme entry points on the new plays due to the fact that we have a large number of pending plays.
our overall strategy is simple; we are aiming for the best possible price with companies that have strong patterns. So it will be a rare event if every play on the pending plays get's filled. If we just issued random entry points then the probability of getting a fill on any given play would surge to almost 80%. However, that is not our strategy, as stated we want to get into strong companies at the best possible price and therefore by default Patience and discipline are of paramount importance.

Mickey Fulp (the Mercenary Geologist) would refer to his extreme entry points as "stink bids". Kinda catchy.SOL wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 6:03 pm We are going to start reducing the time we allow a given stock to pull back to the suggested ranges. Re: number of holdings in my tactical portfolio
Further to my above opening message as to the number of holdings which is currently at 26 stocks with 5 more added yesterday (plus the 2 sell to closes) - im thinking it is getting close to the time that i freeze or cancel all existing level 1 orders completely or just put them on hold into alerts until i pare down some and just keep second and any third level orders in my buy orders. Sol or anyone else can u help me on this? thks oops just added 3 more today.

If you have the time then having an alert sent to you when the stock trades close to the price you want a position is a way to go. Sometimes you might decide you don't want to get into that play as another play makes more sense. And always remember when in doubt sit out, never forget that rule, for one should never be under duress when one is investing. If stress enters the equation its time to sit on the sidelines. Thanks Sol - like that "if in doubt sit it out". I counted total dollar wise at market value i have invested on TI stocks which is almost all level 1 and am high enuf , maybe too high in order to have sufficient to go into level 2's when their time does come. Last night i washed all my orders out except ones that r either level 2 or level 1's but extremely discounted relative to market price. I received a few more buys this morn from my alert system but holding tight. However this did not stop me from forking out some buys on my Canadian side from my Canadian Value newsletter small caps so maybe i have buyeritis. is there a good safe place to stow my excess usd as it is a good time for us canucks to convert more CAD to USD at least the fx rates have improved for us

If i am not mistaken, Interactive borkers allows you to convert to any currency at fairly decent rates. So that is one option.Centeron631 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 4:46 pm Thanks Sol - like that "if in doubt sit it out". Yes to conversion accessiblity: We Canucks use a lot of Norbert's Gambit to convert cad to usd and visa versa. An etf DLR on canadian side and DLR.U on usa side is designed for this. Instructions r easily accessible on search engine for NG and procedures vary slightly from online Broker to Broker. One avoids the admin fee % this way.
