20 banks that are sitting on huge potential securities losses

Post by SOL »

Below is the same list of 10 banks we highlighted on Thursday that showed similar red flags to those shown by SVB Financial through the fourth quarter. This time, we show how much they reported in unrealized losses on available-for-sale, or AFS, securities — an item that played an important role in SVB’s crisis.

The regulators have also said all depositors of Silicon Valley Bank and the failed Signature Bank of New York would have access to their money — even uninsured deposit balances. First Republic Bank FRC, -64.05% (listed below) announced it had secured funding from the Federal Reserve and JPMorgan Chase & Co. JPM, -1.34%
.

This statement is undoubtedly intriguing. It suggests fear or uncertainty on the part of the Fed with regard to their promise to raise rates significantly. Or it's a cunning ploy to back out of their commitment, but first, they will wreak havoc on the markets before miraculously providing a solution. It will be interesting to see how this plays out

A bit long, but the whole thing is quite good. Covers a ton of topics, with lots of potentially challenging intellectual ideas about the markets that are immediately actionable.

Majority must always be on the wrong side of the trade and this applies to banks as well as the general peons.

in jest, but some truth in it ...

consolidation of small banks into the Big Four/Fed will pave the way for FedCoin (which will evolve from USDC), near the end of this decade.

nothing can stop this now ... digital yuan will have a strong place in the 2030s, courtesy of the BRI.

Pretty good contrarian indicator for those who want to buy U.S. banks, now may not be the worst time to accumulate.

My3c: stick with the BigDudes (JPM, BAC, Wells, Citi, Goldman), if you want to partake.

Problem with banks is all these young whippersnappers who don't realize that they are wired to blow the system up every 7/8 years.

Damn, two magazine covers with opposing sentiment information.

Perhaps timing issue ... fade the small/regional banks for now, then fade the big banks later?

Or just stand aside from the banking sector ... often the best trades are the ones that you don't make.

Waiting for a selling climax is always a good option. Once the stock reaches a price below your worst-case scenario and fear sets in. That's usually when it's appropriate to start taking organized bites.

A banking lesson learned from 2008.

Folks are moving $ out if regional banks into majors atm. Not a good thing for local economies tbh.

In 2006 or so I visited a childhood friend in my Midwest US hometown. He had left the venerable Bank his grandparents founded to join a new bank seeking a charter from the state. Large depositors were fleeing obvious trouble ahead and chartering the new entity. It took a year or two but finally opened. When I met with him on a second visit AFTER the crisis hit, he indicated everything was great. Loans were being approved, etc.

Lesson learned. Follow the Smart Money, your local banker. And put funds into one of the new kids that isn't exposed to the credit risk.

Banksters have nine lives.
