The Return of the God Hypothesis

Post by bpcw »

Haven't read the book but thinking of getting it, this video gives a lot of the arguments from it and he is very calm and unemotional with his answers. One of the key arguments for God is the fine-tuning of the universe.

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Why not challenge your belief system (rather than reinforcing it) and read The Blind watchmaker instead?
Current atmospheric levels of CO2 (400ppm) are much lower than 500 million years ago (3000-9000ppm).

I have read 2 books by Richard Dawkins, the first one was called The God Delusion, I read another but I can't remember the name, could be the one you suggested. I've also read books on other religions and had a copy of the quran which I read half of, have read books on philosophy, and psychology. I read the suggested the holographic universe as well, thought it was excellent but wasn't incompatible with a belief in God.

Richard Dawkins in my opinion is deep down a very angry man. He was abused as a child by a schoolmaster probably a religious school as he was brought up a Catholic, seen this before where people become angry at God and turn on him and those who practice faith. He has stated that he thinks forcing religion on children is a worse abuse than sexual abuse. If he doesn't believe God exists why is he spending an inordinate amount of time trying to convince others, angry atheists are fake as far as I'm concerned, hiding their true deep feelings and motivations.

After all I have read and observed I still think that intelligent design is the most rational explanation for our existence. I believe that it's more about the heart and humility, evolution is the religion of the staunch atheist, they hang onto it for dear life just as many religious people do, both are biased.

At the end of the day it's a book suggestion for those searching or interested in the arguments, the guy in the video is calm and collected without venom in his face like RD. By the way not suggesting all atheists are like this and I'm sure you're not. By the way there are very good explanations for Noah's ark that you may not have thought of, many assumptions have been made, it is easily possible.

Got it, and I've heard most of these arguments before. You're right I'm not personally angry or committed to converting Christians everywhere I go. I personally don't find Dawkins too angry, rather he's just strident. If he is angry I believe the causes are similar to what you've stated but also frustration at not being able to get his message through.. And saying he spends an "inordinate amount of time trying to convince others" is exactly what religious do (missionaries, door to door, captured radio stations in every market etc). I realize they feel they are doing good and trying to save soles but that behavior is exhibited in the religious at levels so high you can't even compare to a few traveling college professors debating evolution here and there. Anyway he's the one that coined the term "meme", which has become so misused online. He is a thinker's thinker.

I think it's natural as you say to evangelize if you believe you could be saving souls, and I have no issues with atheists entering in healthy debate. My point is the way the likes of Dawkins goes about it, he goes around trying to convince people, talks about religion as abuse and like a virus, it's not just healthy debate it's aggressive. Also if there is no God, no real meaning to life and everything ends at death why does he waste his time going out of his way to convince people they're wrong, why doesn't he just spend every minute of this limited life serving his self interests, and leave people of faith most of which get an enormous amount from it to their own devices. To me there's a hidden agenda below the seemingly rational person he tries to project.

The problem with the world is that everyone is trying to save everyone from something instead of trying to save themselves from their own delusions. I have no problem with any religion. Hell I am even okay with someone worshipping a tree as long as he/she does not try to convince me that I should join them. If people spent less time trying to convince others to follow their delusional behaviour the world would be better.

Wonderful, so why waste your time trying to convince people of things on this forum, or are you the enlightened one we must all follow!

I am far from the one. I am trying to save myself, which is a hard enough task without trying to save others. My reference was in terms of religion. The religious want to enlighten the non-religious and the non-religious want to save the religious. The solution is to allow each group to do what they want as long as they don't infringe on each other's rights and don't do anything illegal. My 1/2 cent.

OK I understand from that context, those who are entrenched in their positions trying to convince each other, probably a waste of time.

We do meet a lot of people who are open when we do outreach and most are either really grateful for approaching them or politely tell you directly or indirectly that they are not interested, we just accept this and move on, I think this is the answer, inviting people into a discussion but respecting their view to not engage if they so wish, and agreeing to disagree if they have strong alternative opinions. We have seen many respond positively and it has changed peoples lives for the better so even if we are wrong I think there is a place for outreach.

The book suggestion is an invitation for anyone who is interested, I take no offence if no one is interested just as any other book anyone else might care to suggest, one of which was the holographic universe which I chose to read for example.

Yo, you lost that bet about the S&P ending '21 higher vs. Oct. 1st close. You got crushed like little bug by the Ninjedi.

True for the atheist as well as the believer.

You should send a few prayers YoungAnakin's way. He could be busy with his various business shenaningans, but his recent post describing his likely vax-induced rash on his torso could be an ominous sign of things to come. Plus, he's received four jabs, the last in mid-November. That's four too many.

Hopefully Jesus can save him ...

According to some of my associates, they state that in total, 15 people they know have passed away, and over 2 dozen and rising have experienced serious side effects as a result of the Jab.

From my inner circle, no one has taken the Jab, and so far, no issues. Almost all of them, including me, caught COVID and recovered quite quickly. However, my inner circle has been thinning quite rapidly after COVID. At this rate, it might end as a short line or a period lol.

Very interesting Sol, however, bit confused, you say no one in your inner circle took the jab and no issues but your inner circle is thinning, is this for other reasons?

Great book review this, must put more up!
