Stamp collecting

Post by jonnyfrank »

Is anyone here into philately, a.k.a. stamp collecting?

I have collected stamps since way back when they were "a thing". I know stamps took a dive from a value stand point years ago, but I have been reading that high grade stamps and rare stamps are making a comeback. Anyone?

I bought a bunch of stamps years ago, maybe twenty or so years ago. I was kind of like an amateur stamp collector. did it more for fun. I will need to look at the stamps I have. I had a lot of first-day covers and what some said were rare stamps, but who knows?

I also have a lot of rare books. One of them is from Voltaire, dated 1774, I think. Interesting to read it with a lamp, kind of emulates what it might have been to read back in those days.

My father had a stamps collection. He showed me some US stamps from the thirties, a gift sent by my grandfather. My grandfather was living in the US in the thirties. My father was very proud of his Zeppelin of the thirties. He always said me these stamps must stay in the family, from the father to the son. When he passed away, a female shark stole them and sold them. !!!!!

Yes, the Zepps are gems. Sorry to hear about the shark. Desperados are the worst kind of shark.

When I look back, I am amazed at how much I learned about geography and world history from my stamp collection. I can't help but to think that the general decay of the paper nature of stamps will one day bring about a resurrection of the hobby due to scarcity.

I have told my sons the same thing about my stamp and coin collection, lol. Hopefully, they will keep the sharks away. So far, so good on that front.

It'll soon be the turn of all private assets to appreciate versus public assets.

Never been a stamp collector but bought a house owned by a cardiologist (he and his wife had to move into palliative care) the house was "as is" with volumes and volumes of stamps and almost 200 boxes of books. This was just one of the rooms of books:

Looks like you could be busy for a bit if you decide to read even half of those books. You might run into some jems.

Already have. Owner was big into model ship building and has many books on the original methods of the wooden warship construction. A number are almost worth real fiat money.
