the Vagus Nerve - most important nerve in the Body affecting health
There is a live webinar going on this Sept 13 at 1pm mtn or 3pm eastern : by Dr. Navas Habib a expert on this entitled "Activate Your Vegus Nerve"
It is being organized by Dr. Eleanor Stein a world renoun expert in FM, CFS, Long covid, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.. The best way to find the registration to this seminar is to go to her website www. eleanorsteinmd.ca She can also be reached via email [email protected] if u have an interest or know someone who might. From personal experience she is a A1 Doctor and A1 person.
On September 13th she is featuring a live webinar with Toronto's Dr. Navaz Habib about the importance of the vagus nerve and what you should know about it. I am sending this email to give you a bit more information about the vagus nerve to help you decide whether to attend.
Did you know:
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body and it carries important messages from your body to your brain and vice versa. 80% of those messages are from your gut to your brain and are essential in letting your brain know what is happening in your gut, which, as well all know, is your second brain and plays a key role in your overall health.
The nerves extend into the neck and head in close proximity to important blood vessels (carotid, jugular, etc).
It influences the functions of your pharynx (to control swallowing), your larynx (to control airways and vocal cords), your heart (heart rate and blood pressure), your lungs (breathing), your liver (detoxification, bile production), your spleen (immune function), your pancreas (insulin, digestive enzymes), your stomach and intestines (movement of food and motor function of the gut).
Inflammation is often associated with under-activity of the vagus nerve.
If your vagus nerve is not operating optimally, it can have an impact on any or all of the body systems mentioned above to decrease your bodily functions.
The ability of the vagus nerve to operate effectively is affected by your breathing, your posture, your emotions, how and what you eat, and your sleep habits.
There are things you can do to test and assist the functioning of your vagus nerve and therefore to help the operation of all of these systems in your body.
The purpose of this webinar is to explain these statements in more detail and then to show you techniques that you can do at home to activate this important part of your body.
Information sources for the statements above:

@centeron, to my shame never even heard of the vagus nerve. I will look it up; it looks like a vital nerve. Just my two cents I believe that everything is related to inflammation. Higher inflammation and you are more likely to get sick; if it's high enough, well, death is usually close. I try to look at CRP (C reactive protein) and a few other markers, such as homocysteine and stressor hormones. If CRP Is low (i try to keep mine in the 3 to 4.4 ranges) last reading was 2.7 (I started eating less regular meat and more grass-fed), and stressor hormones are low, I suspect everything else will generally be fine and vice versa. Nevertheless, the information you provided was fascinating

The yoga science gives us a gift with the peacock posture. This asana can represent a challenge for the beginners, but it is worth it, and it is a good time investment.
""The positive effect of Mayurasana on GIT can be mainly explained on the
basis of parasympathetic activation via vagus nerve which
mainly activates the “rest and digest” state of the body. Vagal
nerve stimulation has been a therapy to treat many anxieties
and stress related conditions. The activation of vagus nerve
has effects on all the visceral organs of the body. The
digestion is improved as the digestive secretions are well
secreted. The liver works properly and the detoxification
action of this Asana can also be explained via vagus nerve
stimulation. The bile is secreted properly due to its action on
gall bladder. The peristaltic activity of the intestines is
increased by the activity of the same. The activity on the
pancreas increases the production of insulin"".

"follow the science"
The vagus nerve - its name is rooted in "vagabond," or wandering - is a true, master nerve. Connects many organs to the brain, essentially, and transmits information from the organs to the brain, and vice versa. Plays a big part in "body intelligence."
As stefk alludes to, the ancient practices (including pranayama yoga, chi gong, modern forms of Breathwork, Tai Chi Chuan, etc.) derive some of their benefits from specific and nuanced activation of the parasympathetic system (the antithesis of the sympathetic response - fight/flight/freeze), which is in no small part modulated by the vagus nerve.
Think of the parasympathetic system as the "rest and digest" signaling machinery, or "recovery," or "anti-inflammatory" machinery, broadly speaking.
So this stuff has been around a long time - however, some dude or dudette with a PhD (permanent head damage), MD (many douchebags), or measly MA (master of artsy-fartsies), or even all three, practices a bit of these types of practices, reads some research on physiology, and suddenly, it's a New Discovery. Then said individual collaborates with a few others to write a "scientific" paper or two on the subject, and voila, a new scientific discovery! Yay!
Another example: various forms of intermittent fasting has been around for eons. However, the "scientific" community doesn't want to admit this, so it suddenly calls the practice "time-restricted eating" and writes a bunch of papers on it, available for searching on PubMed, and the authors of the papers are hailed as "discovering" something new.
@Lori: some simpler practices to activate vagus nerve (i.e. increase parasympathetic flow, as well as other benefits, all "proven" with science, if one looks hard enough - I've been doing a lot of these for decades):
-gargling.
-yawning.
-laughing, even fake laughter.
-sighs of relief (inhale about twice as much as you usually do, then relax and let out the entire breath passively - do this over and over again);
-take a slow breath in, and let it out in 2x or more the time it took to inhale;
-sleep more than you usually do;
-praying to a Higher Power;
-drink a moderate amount of high quality alcohol, then combine with one of the above;
-have really mediocre to okay sex, then combine with all of the above;
It really works!

I cant imagine anymore the difficulty for a beginner to practice some basic postures. What is easy for me now, is maybe not easy for you.
I have found this tutorial, and I find its a very progressive training method. I dont know your fitness level, but the best posture to begin to master is the chaturanga (the yoga push up). It will give you strength in the wrists and arms, and core, and you will need it to practice the marvellous peacock.
