There's so much I want to say about this, but I'll leave it at ... my condolences.

If there ever was a perfectly understated reply, that must be it ;)

A man walks into a supermarket.

"Can you help me?" he says to the checkout lady (and/or man). "I keep thinking I’m a moth."

"Not really" says the checkout lady - "You want the psychiatrist next door."

"I know," says the man, "but your light was on."

Psychotherapy is a possibility but other avenues to explore first.

Once again thanks for your advice, particularly take on board the physiological side.
A common mistake is to confuse psychologists with psychiatrists. Most psychiatrists don't do therapy. They are medical doctors who went to med school and do mostly prescription management. psychologists are not MDs they are usually Masters or PhDs specializing in counseling who you go to for therapy.

Normally people with depression etc start by talking to a psychologist and only after THOSE guys hear really deep problems that they can't help with or seem chemical will they "refer up" to a psychiatrist. If you think the problem is not "just all in your head" or may be a chemical imbalance (fairly common) it's best to go to a psychiatrist from the beginning. I'm not a believer that you can "talk your problems away"

Thanks, we would certainly go down the counselling route first.

By the way, we are in the UK.

I’d venture most people get depressed due to unrealistic expectations, relying on external factors instead of developing that instinct and having no plan, no objective and no results

I’d say it will only get worse, just look at Japan. Most the youth are afraid to leave their homes and prefer to cave inside lol

An update:

Our son has been sleeping much better in the last couple of weeks with his first couple of nights of breakthrough being 10 & 11 hours but more recently around 7 hours. Obviously this is amazing compared to the last 6 months.

He did take baking soda a few times just before but stopped and we don't think this was cause. The doctor said he was low on vitamin d and folic acid so he has been taking supplements for these plus magnesium which apparently aids absorption of vitamin d. He also said one evening that he thought to himself that he was going to just try and sleep, not entirely sure what he meant as you would think that he was trying for last 6 months but possibly shows a change mentally.

To be honest we're not certain the exact cause of this turnaround, possibly a combination but we are very relieved and pleased about it. Voices seem to have quietened down as well.

Thanks all for your input! :D

I'm all for alternative remedies but I can't how see playing in a palm tree would be conducive to sleep.

Is there some kind of essential oil in the bark?

Harry, you usually make my day. When you comment, it's usually full of wisdom or humour and you have a gift of saying the darndest of things at precisely the right time.

If I were to hazard a guess. I guess being a youngster letting some steam out from a certain nozzle might help calm the nerves but then again, there might be some kind of essential oil on the bark, maybe lavender lol

Some of those palm trees can give you a Saw Palmetto.
