Re: Gun Stuff
Did a quick Google and found this,
https://promagindustries.com/sks-7-62x3 ... lue-steel/
Damn, $40, I think I paid $125 for my SKS back in the day. Forget what I paid for my mag, got it at a Dallas gun show.

Re: Gun Stuff
The 10mm is not as good a manstopper as the .357, neither is the .44mag in general. They have more energy, but overpenetrate, not exerting all of their energy on the "unfortunate". The 10mm was developed for the FBI, when they were looking for something more effective when a barrier is involved, like a windshield or car door. Deflection was also a consideration. After all the testing it wasn't adopted, and S&W shortened it to the .40 S&W (never heard it called the short&weak till your post). Control, and follow up shots, are adversely affected with more energy.
In my not so humble opinion, the 50AE is a novelty for those so inclined. Not practical except perhaps for handgun hunting. Even so, I would prefer a .44mag with an 8"-10" barrel, inherently more accurate.
I'll never forget a story by a mercenary who went to Africa as an advisor; whether the story is true or not, it conveys a truth about weapons and their choice. "Big Daddy" (maybe or maybe not, no names were mentioned) had a bodyguard by him with an Uzi, five silhouette targets awaiting. At his behest, the guard fired on the targets, emptying his mag in about five seconds. Two of the targets could be considered dead, two incapacitated, and one was untouched. Asked what he thought, the merc drew his pistol and centerpunched the five targets in under three seconds. For sure, it would have taken him longer with a .50AE (not available at that time).

Re: Gun Stuff
Actually the FBI did adopt the 10mm but quickly switched to reduced power loads because the agents were too delicate and full power civilian loads were preventing then from getting qualifying scores in their firearms assessment. Some people called the load "10mm-lite", but I've heard it called the "FBI-load" most often...which doesn't sound nearly as sissy as "10mm-lite". Someone at Smith & Wesson figured out they didn't need the magnum case capacity for the wimpy "FBI-load" and figured with a shortened case they could still match the power of the "FBI-load" but load the cartridges in smaller framed guns originally designed for 9mm Luger.
I'm a fan of .40, and calling it "short & weak" is all in good fun (and it's funny 'cuz it's true).
I have a friend that was trying to "break-in" and "function-test" his new 10mm Glock by putting 500 full-power rounds through it without cleaning it and with zero malfunctions. I helped him by putting two full magazines through it, but I stopped at two "while it was still fun" (I felt by the end of the 3rd magazine it would start becoming an unpleasant chore).

Re: Gun Stuff
I learned one of the most important considerations when choosing a handgun is the grip. When target shooting one takes time to ensure the grip is the same every time. If not, your group will be in a different spot. So, if you don't have the time to take, its best to have a handgun with a grip that naturally fits in your hand the same every time you pick it up, or draw it; practicing helps.
Of course custom grips can be made, but only to the extent the frame allows. I don't have small hands, but never considered a high capacity magazine pistol my "go to" choice. Maybe because I never considered I might be in a zombie attack situation.

Re: Gun Stuff
I've got the itch... The silly Heritage 16" barreled revolver I bought didn't scratch it... I'm thinking of buying a Glock 22 Gen5 (for non-Glockphiles it's chambered in .40 short & weak). I might also entertain buying or building a long slide variant (G35 or G24 or 3rd-party/aftermarket parts build).
I have to admit, I'm such a contrarian that I've avoided buying a Glock simply because they're popular. To be honest, I'm not even in love with the idea of owning a Glock. I am in love with the idea of "standard-capacty glockazines" or "Glock Mags" as normal people call them and high-capacity mags.... Of course that's just opening the door to a collection of pistol caliber carbines that take glockazines; Kel Tec Sub 2000, Ruger PC Carbine, AR-40...

Glock = gold = BTC = USD.
Reliable, or so I'm told. Doesn't misfire. When the SHTF and you actually need to use it, it'll be there for you, rain or shine.
Avoid the fancy guns.

I had a Ruger Carbine in .44mag. It was a jamamatic. Their new carbine, maybe not. Glock model 19, never a problem.

Re: Gun Stuff
A person could buy at minimum any 3 of my guns for the price of the fourth fanciest 1911 in any local gun shops case. Avoiding fancy guns hasn't been a problem for me.
Come to think of it, I believe I've only paid $400 or more for two or three of the 20+ guns in the house and I'm pretty sure I haven't yet paid $500 for a gun (if I have it was only one in the collection).

Re: Gun Stuff
After a 2 year break for the scamdemic, pistol league is back! I shot a 190/300 with a single action revolver that I've basically never shot before (three cylinders or less) and the sights haven't been adjusted. It shots a little low, I'll raise the rear sight a couple clicks before next week and see what happens.

A Ruger I'm guessing? I had a Blackhawk .44 w/8 1/2 inch barrel. Nice pointer, and good for long range stuff.Eric wrote: ↑Thu May 12, 2022 6:55 am After a 2 year break for the scamdemic, pistol league is back! See my above comment about avoiding fancy guns...

It's a Heritage Rough Rider .22 with 16" barrel & adjustable sights.

Well I wonder if today is the day... I've never had an allergic reaction to a chicken cesar salad before... Home heating season is done though so I've got that going for me...
