AI Unveiled:: The good, the bad and the ugly

Post by SOL »

The developments in the AI arena are intriguing. The advancements are exciting, but the impact on human cognition Is potentially troubling. On the one hand, AI can enhance specific abilities, but on the other hand, it could very well lead to a decline in higher thinking and IQs for most individuals.

As people become increasingly reliant on AI, there is a risk of losing the ability to think critically and independently. This phenomenon is similar to the rise of smartphones, where technological improvements haven't necessarily made people more intelligent. Let's share and exchange ideas on this subject.

"Participation trophy generation" destroys the "best and brightest". When you are prepared to accept and reward mediocre, what you get is that and worse.
Following my interview with the good Judge, I chatted with a retired CIA buddy who filled me in on the personnel disaster that is transforming the CIA into a fully woke institution. Thirty years ago an aspiring employee had to pass a polygraph and had to be drug free. Prior use of marijuana or other recreational drugs could be a show stopper. That was then. Now? The CIA only asks if the applicant has smoked pot or taken other illicit drugs in the year prior to applying to the Agency. I would not be surprised to learn that once a former drug user is brought on board that there is no obstacle for him or her to continue to indulge the guilty pleasure of getting buzzed (hopefully while not at work).

More disturbing is the current hiring practice — in a recent class for new analysts, 92% of the new hires came from one State. If you guessed Alabama or Virginia you would be wrong. 92% of the analysts hail from one of the most liberal states in the United States. The Agency hiring standard is welcoming the Woke crowd and eschewing men and women who profess traditional values. If you hold Conservative values you need not apply. You probably will not be hired.

I have written previously about the pressure CIA managers face when they write the yearly evaluation on their employees, which plays a key role in determining who gets promoted. If an employee is a minority or openly homosexual or transgender and does not get promoted the manager is required to write an explanation why he or she did not promote said person. Guess what happens? People get promoted because of their social justice status rather than the quality of their work. Is it any wonder that the quality of the CIA analytical product is succumbing to political pressure?

If you want to speed things up, fast forward to the 3-minute time stamp. According to what they say, and so far it appears to be the case, it seems that a stock market crash or other disasters might pale in comparison to what lies in store for most individuals: total domination by AI-based entities. The new TV series "Rabbit Hole" covers this to some degree, especially in Episodes 7 and 8. By leveraging vast amounts of data and employing an AI agent, it becomes possible to craft any desired narrative. What's more, disturbing is that the general public will naturally assume that the conclusion was reached through their own resources.

Indeed, people are literally in their own VR reality with smart phones.

I’m close to considering to getting a flip phone and removing my smart phone. The last thing I need is be infected with stupidity and being a product

Soon common sense will not exist to the average Joe lol

I still have my old flip phone, and I also have that tiny Nokia phone.   What I would greatly miss is GPS, especially when exploring unfamiliar locations.

As for common sense, it appears that the vast majority have chosen TikTok and Twitter as suitable replacements for it.

AI Perils Unleashed: Brace Yourself for Doppelgängers

Post by SOL »

https://youtu.be/sGYWQiU7C70

AI is advancing rapidly, and currently, it can generate text, audio, and even visual content that completely resembles a specific individual if provided with sufficient data to emulate them. Hence, it’s absolutely vital to establish secret phrases/codes with family members as a precautionary measure. This will help safeguard against one of the significant threats to people's wealth.

To begin with, it is essential to strengthen your passwords significantly. Ensure they can not be cracked with the computing power available today for at least a thousand years.

Look at the password I've created; suffice to say, it won’t be cracked tomorrow.

To assess the strength of your password, use the link below.

If AI can achieve this today, just imagine what it will accomplish tomorrow.

FYI simple passwords can be cracked in seconds

I'm surprised that *************************** would be that difficult to crack.

Trouble with complex passwords is that they are hard to remember, so we tend write them down somewhere....

Just Calm Down About GPT-4 Already And stop confusing performance with competence, says Rodney Brooks

Rapid and pivotal advances in technology have a way of unsettling people, because they can reverberate mercilessly, sometimes, through business, employment, and cultural spheres. And so it is with the current shock and awe over large language models, such as GPT-4 from OpenAI.

It’s a textbook example of the mixture of amazement and, especially, anxiety that often accompanies a tech triumph. And we’ve been here many times, says Rodney Brooks. Best known as a robotics researcher, academic, and entrepreneur, Brooks is also an authority on AI: he directed the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT until 2007, and held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon and Stanford before that. Brooks, who is now working on his third robotics startup, Robust.AI, has written hundreds of articles and half a dozen books and was featured in the motion picture Fast, Cheap & Out of Control. He is a rare technical leader who has had a stellar career in business and in academia and has still found time to engage with the popular culture through books, popular articles, TED Talks, and other venues.

“It gives an answer with complete confidence, and I sort of believe it. And half the time, it’s completely wrong.”
—Rodney Brooks, Robust.AI

Fascinating read, albeit somewhat extended, yet it presents an angle implying that AI is, to some extent, lacking in intellect.
