China’s top weapons scientist says nuclear fusion power is 6 years away

Post by SOL »

Peng Xianjue unveils plans for combined fusion-fission reactor that could make China world’s first to achieve the elusive viable energy source

No country has so far managed to build a facility that generates more power than it uses in the fission process

The Chinese government has approved construction of the world’s largest pulsed-power plant with plans to generate nuclear fusion energy by 2028, according to the top nuclear weapons scientist leading the project.
“Fusion ignition is the jewel in the crown of science and technology in today’s world,” said Peng Xianjue, a professor with the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, in an online meeting organised by Beijing-based think tank Techxcope on September 9.

“Being the world’s first to achieve energy-scale fusion energy release will lay the most important milestone in the road to fusion energy for human beings.”

Peng, 81, has developed some of China’s most advanced small nuclear warheads and served as a top adviser to the country’s nuclear weapons programme, according to openly available information.
The Z-pinch machine – which replicates the fusion reactions of a thermonuclear bomb through magnetic pressure created by an extremely strong electric pulse – is expected to be completed around 2025 in Chengdu the capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan.

The machine will produce 50 million amperes of electricity – about twice as much as the record-holding Z pulsed power facility, a similar device at the Sandia National Laboratory in the US, Peng said.
Nuclear powers like the US, Russia and China have built a number of Z-pinch machines over the past few decades – some of which have never been officially disclosed – to simulate the extreme conditions needed to develop atomic weapons.

The US DOE has been working on this for three or four decades. It's my belief nobody pursued it with cheap oil and incentives for "green" energy. Nuclear has been given the cold shoulder but it"s necessary to provide cheap, clean energy for the long term. I suggest it's likely true fusion is attainable but commercial interests and environmental nazis have delayed construction and evaluation of a prototype in the USA. Idaho National Engineering Lab would have reported on a successful prototype reactor but I don't believe anyone has requested one to be built and tested.

Retard INC AKA Biden INC continues to mess up

U.S. scrambles to prevent export curbs on China chips from disrupting supply chain

The U.S. is scrambling to tackle unintended consequences of its new export curbs on China's chip industry that could inadvertently harm the semiconductor supply chain, people familiar with the matter said.

Hours before a new restriction took effect, South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc said it got authorization from the United States to receive goods for its chip production facilities in China without additional licensing imposed by the new rules.

Separately, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co secured a one-year license to continue ordering American chipmaking equipment for its expansion in China, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday.

The U.S. government assured TSMC that it will be able to ship the equipment to a manufacturing facility in the Chinese city of Nanjing, Nikkei report said, citing people familiar with the matter. TSMC did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The Biden administration had planned to spare foreign companies operating in China such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics Co from the brunt of new restrictions, but the rules published Friday did not exempt such firms.

As published, the rules require licenses before U.S. exports can be shipped to facilities with advanced chip production in China as part of a U.S. bid to slow China's technological and military advances.

And as of midnight Tuesday, vendors also could not support, service and send non-U.S. supplies to the China-based factories without licenses if U.S. companies or people are involved.

As a result, even basic items like light bulbs, springs, and bolts that keep tools running may not have been able to be shipped until vendors are granted licenses. And without the minute-by-minute support the foundries need, they could begin shutting down, one source said.

Fusion power has been my wet dream for the world since the 70's. If I remember correctly, the University of Syracuse was involved with the first ever fusion reaction that required less energy for (laser) ignition, than it produced, a net plus. To commercialize, the thinking was, it would have to be a continuous process. Problem being containing the process, which is magnetically, and don't ask me how.

Many countries have pursued the goal, some collaborating, realizing the cost to pursue, too expensive for any one country. If any one country did, they could ostensibly have an energy monopoly. Electricity? Hydrogen from electrolosis? What's your pleasure?

Pulsed rather than continuous reaction possible, sure, commercially viable, don't think so, but maybe for some years.

It's not that the people pulling old Puddinghead's strings are so dumb they can't possibly get ANYTHING right... It's that they don't want to.

Where you see failure, I see incredible success. I wish failure upon them but alas they are succeeding according to their wildest dreams.

It is not failure to them since their goal is a complete destruction of America, and then selling it off in bits and pieces. This is still a ground floor opportunity for psychopaths with a burning desire for control and wealth. Get in now, sell your soul, and your time here on earth will be all you think you want it to be. Just serve the party and lie, cheat, steal, gaslight, and do whatever it takes to win over the people (American politicians). America is a dumpster fire right now, and it does not look good for her empire. Oh well, she had a good run. No empire lasts forever. Life will go on, and hopefully the human race will continue to evolve in positive ways.

nothing you say is technically not true, from a certain perspective, but the ROW (rest of world) has worse problems than america ... it's like being the world's 9th worst poker player at the table, but if the other 8 players are shittier than you, you'll still end up kicking ass as the best ...

whatever problems USA has, the ROW has it worse ... Uncle Sam is still going to dominate for at least another 10 years, likely more.

i say this as a reluctant Canadian citizen born on foreign shores, and a heavy critic of American foreign (and domestic) policy.

peeps like to compare the current state of the American Empire to the Fall of Rome, but these peeps forget that it took the Roman Empire around 400+ years to fall ...

And BTW, you can add 1000 years more for the real fall of the roman empire. The official historians forget to say that what they call the byzantine empire, was in fact the roman empire. The "Byzantines" never called themselves byzantines, but they called themselves Romans.

The Romans were not subjected to the IT and AI technology of today, which is bound to accelerate the downfall of an entertainment and immediate gratification addicted society. Culturally, we certainly have lost our way. The Russian's were right about the "decadence of the West" back in the cold war days. While the US may "dominate" economically for a while yet, the war for its soul has already been carved into by the powers of darkness.
